Evaluation of chloride mass balance and recharge in agricultural lands in Nigeria CIGR Journal
A Sobowale; Department of Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineering, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria; A A Ramalan; O J Mudiare; M A Oyebode.
Groundwater salinization studies and recharge estimation was carried out at the Irrigation Research Station, Kadawa, Nigeria. Groundwater samples from fifteen randomly selected piezometer locations were analyzed monthly for chloride using Mohr’s method for three years while recharge was estimated using the chloride mass balance (CMB) method. Groundwater chloride range from 22 - 91.4 mg/l, seasonal trend was identified with the hot dry season (April – June) having higher values than the wet season (July – October). Correlation analysis revealed chloride status that is not associated with one another in all soil types while salt build up was observed at the south western tip of the farmland indicating potential reduction of agricultural productivity. CMB...

Etude de Vulcanodinium rugosum (Dinoflagellé producteur de pinnatoxines) se développant dans la lagune méditerranéenne de l’Ingril ArchiMer
Abadie, Eric.
Harmful and / or toxic phytoplankton blooms impact for a long time marine ecosystems worldwide. These massive developments have an adverse effect on ecosystems and their exploitation. The lagoons of the region Languedoc-Roussillon are affected for decades. In addition to recurring health risks from Dinophysis (DSP toxins) and Alexandrium (PSP toxins), Vulcanodinium rugosum was identified in 2011 in the lagoon Ingril. This new species product pinnatoxins (neurotoxins). Through this thesis work, the biology of this new species (life cycle, growth condition, toxin production), its shellfish contamination capacity and geographic distribution in neighboring lagoons were studied on cultures in the laboratory and via environmental monitoring. The results of this...

Effect of Nitrate, Ammonium and Urea on Growth and Pinnatoxin G Production of Vulcanodinium rugosum ArchiMer
Abadie, Eric; Kaci, Lamia; Berteaux, Tom; Hess, Philipp; Sechet, Veronique; Masseret, Estelle; Rolland, Jean-luc; Laabir, Mohamed.
ulcanodinium rugosum, a recently described dinoflagellate species producing a potent neurotoxin (pinnatoxin G), has been identified in French Mediterranean lagoons and was responsible for recurrent episodes of shellfish toxicity detected by mouse bioassay. Until now, the biology and physiology of V. rugosum have not been fully investigated. We studied the growth characteristics and toxicity of a V. rugosum strain (IFR-VRU-01), isolated in the Ingril lagoon in June 2009 (North-Western French Mediterranean Sea). It was cultivated in Enriched Natural Sea Water (ENSW) with organic (urea) and inorganic (ammonium and nitrate) nitrogen, at a temperature of 25 °C and irradiance of 100 μmol/m2·s−1. Results showed that ammonium was assimilated by cells more rapidly...

Resistance assessment of grapevine rootstocks used in Chile to the root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne ethiopica, M. hapla, and M. javanica Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Aballay,Erwin; Vilches,Oscar.
The rootstocks 1103 P, 101-14, K 5BB, SO4, and 3309 were assessed to determine their resistance to the three common Meloidogyne species present in Chilean vineyards, M. ethiopica, the most frequent species, M. hapla and M. javanica. Their response was compared to three ungrafted cultivars, Thompson Seedless, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. To perform this study, two month-old plants produced from cuttings were inoculated with 5,000 eggs per 3-L pots, filled with steamed substrate and kept in a glasshouse covered with a black mesh to intercept 30% of sun light and avoid heating of the substrates. After a growth period of six months, plants were removed from the pots, and resistance was determined by measuring root weights, the number of galls and eggs per g of...

DNM2 mutations in a cohort of sporadic patients with centronuclear myopathy Genet. Mol. Biol.
Abath Neto,Osorio; Martins,Cristiane de Araújo; Carvalho,Mary; Chadi,Gerson; Seitz,Katia Werneck; Oliveira,Acary Souza Bulle; Reed,Umbertina Conti; Laporte,Jocelyn; Zanoteli,Edmar.
Centronuclear myopathy (CNM) is a rare congenital muscle disease characterized by fibers with prominent centralized nuclei in muscle biopsies. The disease is clinically heterogeneous, ranging from severe neonatal hypotonic phenotypes to adult-onset mild muscle weakness, and can have multiple modes of inheritance in association with various genes, including MTM1, DNM2, BIN1 and RYR1. Here we analyzed 18 sporadic patients with clinical and histological diagnosis of CNM and sequenced the DNM2 gene, which codes for the dynamin 2 protein. We found DNM2 missense mutations in two patients, both in exon 8, one known (p.E368K) and one novel (p.F372C), which is found in a position of presumed pathogenicity and appeared de novo. The patients had similar phenotypes...

Effect of period of harvest on drying characteristics of an improved variety cowpea (IT 97K-56S-IS) CIGR Journal
Abdulganiy, Raji Olayinka; Taiwo, OLANREWAJU Oluwatoyin.
Shattering loss and loss due to pest attack significantly reduce the quantity and quality of cowpea that can be harvested from the field, hence, the possibility of early harvest of cowpea was investigated. Thin-layer drying kinetics of IT 97K-56S-IS was experimentally investigated in a convective dryer and mathematical modelling was performed by using five thin layer drying models. Experiments were performed on samples harvested 60, 64, 68 and 72 Days After Planting (DAP) and drying temperature of 55, 65, 75 and 85ºC. The effect of period of harvest and drying temperature on the drying characteristics and nutritional content of the dried products were determined. The models performance was evaluated by comparing the coefficient of determination (R2) and...

The seasonal sea-ice zone in the glacial Southern Ocean as a carbon sink ArchiMer
Abelmann, Andrea; Gersonde, Rainer; Knorr, Gregor; Zhang, Xu; Chapligin, Bernhard; Maier, Edith; Esper, Oliver; Friedrichsen, Hans; Lohmann, Gerrit; Meyer, Hanno; Tiedemann, Ralf.
Reduced surface-deep ocean exchange and enhanced nutrient consumption by phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean have been linked to lower glacial atmospheric CO2. However, identification of the biological and physical conditions involved and the related processes remains incomplete. Here we specify Southern Ocean surface-subsurface contrasts using a new tool, the combined oxygen and silicon isotope measurement of diatom and radiolarian opal, in combination with numerical simulations. Our data do not indicate a permanent glacial halocline related to melt water from icebergs. Corroborated by numerical simulations, we find that glacial surface stratification was variable and linked to seasonal sea-ice changes. During glacial spring-summer, the mixed layer was...

Pineal Gland Plays a Role in Gonadal Development after Eyelids Separation in Puppies International Journal of Morphology
Abou-Easa,Khalil; El-Magd,Mohammed Abu; Tousson,Ehab; Hassanin,Amin; Shukry,Mustafa; Salama,Mohammed.
Several functional and morphological studies have been conducted on the pineal gland in many mammalian species; however, no published reports are available on the role of pineal gland on the gonadal development before and after eyelids separation in puppies. Therefore, this study aimed to trace the postnatal histo-morphological changes in the pineal gland and gonads of puppies before (2, 10 and 11 days old) and after (25, 35 and 40 days old) eyelids separation in an attempt to investigate the possible role of pineal gland on the gonadal development. In general, the differentiation of pineal cells, interstitial endocrine cells of testes and stromal ovarian cells coincides with the start of eyelids separation in puppies. Histological examination of stained...

Gross morphology of the brain of Pseudopimelodus bufonius (Valenciennes, 1840) (Siluriformes: Pseudopimelodidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Abrahão,Vitor Pimenta; Shibatta,Oscar Akio.
The gross morphology of the brain of the pseudopimelodid Pseudopimelodus bufonius is described and compared with congeners. Observations were made on removed brains after elimination of bones from the top of the skull and severing of the cranial nerves and the spinal cord. Nine morphometric characters associated with the major subdivisions of the brain were identified, seven of which revealed significant differences among the species examined. The corpus cerebelli in all examined species of the genus is the largest structure of the brain. The behavior of the species of Pseudopimelodus is still unknown, but in other teleosts that condition is typically correlated with a higher degree of motor coordination. Relative size proportions of the tectum opticum,...

Prompted by a series of increasingly destructive, expensive, and highly visible wildfire crises in human communities across the globe, a robust body of scholarship has emerged to theorize, conceptualize, and measure community-level resilience to wildfires. To date, however, insufficient consideration has been given to wildfire resilience as a process of adaptive governance mediated by institutions at multiple scales. Here we explore the possibilities for addressing this gap through an analysis of wildfire resilience among wildland-urban interface communities in the western region of the United States. We re-engage important but overlooked components of social-ecological system resilience by situating rural communities within their state- to national-level...
